Hindhead TunnelThe Hindhead Tunnel project has been the biggest investment into the local road system for decades. Costing around £371 million, Its purpose is to remove the last remaining section of single carriageway road between London and Porsmouth, Reducing congestion, improving road safety and air quality.

 

Advance works prior to construction of the tunnel started finally in January 2007 and main construction works, including the tunnelling, started in 2008.

 

The Southbound bore of the tunnel and new road layout for Southbound traffic was opened to the general public on the 27th July 2011. The Northbound bore is expected to open in the next few days once the road layout has been modified to suit the new flow of traffic.

Facts..

The Hindhead Tunnel Is the second most expensive road in the UK per mile, is 1.14 miles long and the longest non-estuarial road tunnel in the UK, contains 156 miles of cable, has 104 CCTV cameras, digging the tunnel took 290,875 man hours, a total of 4,322 people worked on the project and 737,000 cubic metres of earth were excavated during the tunnel's construction.
